DIY Guide · Wood Repair BasicsA chair that rocks, a drawer that sticks, a joint that gave out after thirty years of good use. Most of that is fixable with the right glue, the right clamps, and a little patience. Here is how to think about wood repair and where to start.
There is something genuinely wonderful about solid wood furniture that most people do not realize until they try to repair it. It wants to go back together. The joints were designed to be taken apart and re-glued. The wood itself is forgiving in ways that particle board and MDF will never be. A solid wood chair that wobbles is not a broken chair. It is a chair that needs about an hour of your time and a bottle of wood glue.
Particle board falls apart and stays apart. Solid wood comes back. That is one of the reasons it is worth saving.
That said, there is a difference between a loose joint you can fix on a Saturday and a structural failure that needs a shop. This guide covers the Saturday stuff. We will tell you clearly when something crosses the line into shop work.
For most basic structural repair you need a surprisingly short list of things.
Wood glue is the foundation of almost every repair. Titebond III is the one to get. It is waterproof, it is stronger than the wood itself when it cures, and it gives you enough open time to work with before it sets. Do not use regular white school glue or construction adhesive. Use wood glue.
Clamps are how you hold everything together while the glue cures. You do not need a shop full of them but you need enough to apply even pressure across the joint you are repairing. Bar clamps or pipe clamps for larger pieces, spring clamps for smaller ones. If you do not own clamps, a hardware store run before you start this project is not optional.
A rubber mallet is useful for tapping joints back together without damaging the wood. Do not use a regular hammer directly on the wood surface. Put a scrap block between the hammer and the piece if a mallet is not available.
Wood glue remover or denatured alcohol for cleaning old glue out of joints before re-gluing. This step gets skipped more than any other and it is the reason a lot of DIY repairs fail. New glue does not bond well to old dried glue. Clean the joint first.
Sandpaper in a few grits for cleaning up squeeze-out and surface prep after repair.

This is the single most common repair that walks through the door and it is almost always fixable at home if you catch it before it gets too far gone.
The process is simple in theory. Disassemble the loose joint, clean out the old dried glue, apply fresh glue, reassemble, clamp, and wait. The challenge is that chairs are complicated structures with multiple joints working together and if one is loose there are usually others on their way. Do them all at the same time rather than fixing one and coming back for the next one in six months.
Take the chair apart as far as the loose joints require. Use a rubber mallet to tap joints apart gently. If a joint is stuck and you force it you will split the wood. Work slowly and wiggle rather than yank.
Clean the old glue out of every socket and off every tenon with a small chisel, a wire brush, or a folded piece of sandpaper. Get it clean. This is the step that determines whether your repair lasts five years or fifty.
Apply Titebond III to both surfaces of the joint, the socket and the tenon, and reassemble. Tap gently with the mallet until the joint is fully seated. Apply clamps and check that everything is square before the glue sets. A chair that cures slightly out of square is a chair that wobbles for a different reason than before.
Wipe off squeeze-out with a damp cloth before it dries. Dried glue squeeze-out is harder to deal with and it does not take stain the same way the wood does which will show up if you are refinishing.
Leave it clamped for at least twenty four hours. Forty eight is better. The glue may feel set in a few hours but full strength takes time.
Drawers fail in a few different ways and the fix depends on which one you are dealing with.
If the drawer is simply stiff and hard to pull open, rub a candle or a bar of soap along the wooden runners and the bottom edges of the drawer sides. That is often all it needs and it takes about thirty seconds.
If the drawer is coming apart at the corners, that is a glue joint failure. Same process as the chair joints. Disassemble, clean, re-glue, clamp, wait.
If the drawer bottom is sagging or falling out, it is usually held in a groove by a few small nails or staples. Re-secure it with a thin bead of wood glue along the groove and a few small brad nails. Clamp it flat while it dries.
If the drawer face is separating from the drawer box, apply glue to the joint, clamp it, and let it cure fully before using the drawer again.
A split along the grain of a wood panel is one of the more alarming things to find on a piece you care about and also one of the more fixable ones if it has not gone too far.
For a clean split with no missing wood, work wood glue into the split as deeply as you can get it. Use a thin flexible tool, a putty knife, a playing card, or even a piece of cardboard to work the glue down into the crack. Apply clamps across the split to pull it closed and wipe off the squeeze-out. Let it cure fully before unclamping.
For a split that has opened up and has a gap, you have a few options. A clear epoxy filler can be worked into the gap and sanded flush after curing. Or a butterfly inlay, sometimes called a bowtie, can be cut from a contrasting wood and inlaid across the split to stabilize it and add a decorative element at the same time. The butterfly inlay approach is more involved but it is also more honest about what happened to the piece and there is something beautiful about that.
A clean break on a leg with no missing wood can often be re-glued successfully. Apply glue to both surfaces, align carefully, clamp from multiple directions to hold the alignment, and let it cure fully. Once cured the glue joint is often stronger than the surrounding wood.
A break with missing wood, a shattered section, or a break at a joint rather than in the middle of the leg is more complicated. Depending on the piece and the location of the break it may need a dutchman repair, a splice, or a replacement leg turned to match. That is shop work.
Some repairs cross a line where the tools, the skills, or the stakes are beyond a reasonable DIY effort.
Veneer repairs that involve lifting, bubbling, or missing sections need proper veneer tools and materials and a light touch that comes with practice. A bad veneer repair is very visible and very hard to undo.
Broken legs at the joint where the leg meets the frame are complicated because the joint itself is usually a mortise and tenon or a dowel joint that requires disassembly of the whole base to repair properly.
Structural failures in antique or valuable pieces where getting it wrong would reduce the value or damage something irreplaceable. If the piece is worth real money or real sentiment, the repair should be done by someone who does this every day.
Any repair that requires turning a new part to match an existing one. Lathework is a skill that takes time to develop and a mismatched turning will bother you every time you look at the piece.

All of those are good reasons to hand it off and none of them are reasons to feel bad about it.
Structural repair done right is invisible. You should not be able to tell it happened. That kind of result comes from knowing exactly how much glue to use, exactly how much clamping pressure to apply, exactly how long to wait, and exactly what to do when something unexpected turns up halfway through the job. That knowledge comes from doing it a few hundred times.
